history

The university has its roots in Rogaland Regional College, established in 1969. In 1986, Rogaland Regional College merged with the Rogaland Polytechnic to form Rogaland College Center. Stavanger University College was formed in 1994, when Rogaland College Center merged with Stavanger Nursing College, Stavanger Social Work College, the Norwegian Hospitality College, Stavanger Teachers’ College, Rogaland Music Conservatory and the Congregational College. Stavanger University College was granted the status of a university by the government in 2005.

The University of Stavanger has an innovative and international profile and constitutes a driving force in the development of knowledge and change processes in society. The university’s societal mission is to challenge the well-known and explore the unknown.

The University of Stavanger is currently the third highest ranked in Norway in terms of number of research publications per member of scientific staff. The university became a member of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU) in October 2012.

 

Campus and facilities at Stavanger University in Norway:

Stavanger University is organised in six faculties: Educational Sciences and Humanities, Social Sciences, Science and Technology, Performing Arts, Health Sciences and the Norwegian School of Management at UiS. There are also two national centres of expertise and the Museum of Archaeology. The university campus is located in the neighborhood of Ullandhaug.

  • Dining:

The dining services provided on campus can offer good and affordable options to most students. Most of the student cantinas are operated by Studentsamskipnaden i Stavanger, SiS Cafe. SiS kafé offers affordable and healthy food. They can offer a weekly dinner menu, as well as salads, vegetarian food, pizza, sandwiches and various cold dishes. The “Book Café” in Kjølv Egelands hus offers tea and espresso-based coffee drinks. You can also enjoy smoothies, wine, beer and other cold beverages in a comfortable atmosphere.

  • Faculty of Performing Arts:

Located in the beautiful green surroundings of Bjergsted Park, close to the centre of Stavanger, Faculty of Performing Arts is neighbour and partner to the city’s cultural life. Other park «residents» include the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, The Stavanger Concert House, and Stavanger Performing Arts School, as well as the Stavanger Concert Society and the Norwegian Institute of Recorded Sound.

Faculty of Performing Arts has more than 200 students pursuing a range of courses in classical music, jazz, voice, music education, dance education and music production and recording.

 

Language requirements for applying to Stavanger University in Norway:

As a general requirement, all applicants must meet the English language requirement. For studies taught in Norwegian, applicants must meet both Norwegian and English language requirements.

It should be said that bachelor’s degrees are mainly taught in Norwegian and there is no requirement for Norwegian language proficiency for master studies taught in English. As a general requirement, applicants to International Master’s Programs must document proficiency in English at an advanced level through an international test/exam, recognized by the University of Stavanger.

Courses offered at Stavanger University in Norway:

Stavanger University offers bachelor’s, master’s and PHD programs. The courses are related to different subjects such as Arts and Education, Social Sciences, Science and Technology, Health Science and Performing Arts.

The UiS Business School (In Norwegian: Handelshøyskolen ved UiS) is a business school and a faculty under UiS. The school offers a wide variety of educational programmes, and is one of the largest institutions in Norway educating students at the master’s level in business administration.

The University of Stavanger does not offer any other scholarships. Students applying to other programs must apply as self-financing students.

You will not have to pay tuition fees if:

All students admitted to degree studies or exchange programmes at the University of Stavanger can apply for student housing through SiS Housing. The rental price is NOK 3,200–5,300 per month per person. The rooms are modestly furnished with a bed, desk, and closet. However, no dishes, cooking utensils, duvet, pillow or towels are available in the accommodations. You have to bring your own or purchase the items upon arrival. Electricity and broadband internet connection are included. You may need to buy your own Wi-Fi router.

General information for international students:

  • International students will be given a housing application code upon registration of study application. You should use this given code to apply for student housing. This code should be used by international students who are arriving in Norway for the first time ONLY.
  • Due to the precarious housing situation in Stavanger, UiS does not guarantee accommodation for all international students.
  • You will receive only one housing offer and if you reject it, you have to make your own arrangements.
  • Contracts cover usually one or two full semesters, and full semesters only (five months*).
  • There are no family apartments available for international students with children. Only single room apartments are available for international students.
  • International students cannot change their room with another person in the dorms, nor change dorms without the approval of SiS Housing.
  • It is not possible to terminate the contract with SiS Housing during the first 5 months of the contract.
