history

During the 1960s, inhabitants of the Fraser Valley fervently demanded the establishment of a tertiary education facility within their locale. In 1966, a proposal for the inception of a junior college faced rejection at the hands of the provincial government. Undeterred by this initial setback, proponents of advanced education pivoted towards advocating for the construction of a vocational school. The designated site for this academic institution was slated to be positioned near the geographic midpoint of the Fraser Valley, precisely along Lickman Road in the municipality of Chilliwack.

This proposal gained approval, setting into motion the logistical plans for the school’s realization. However, the advent of a new provincial government in 1972 prompted a suspension of the school’s developmental trajectory. Communities persisted in their plea for the continuation of this educational project, leading to the formation of a specialized task force by the government to scrutinize the viability of establishing a college in the Fraser Valley. The task force recommended the establishment of an inclusive regional college, offering pathways encompassing university transfers, career programs, and vocational training. A plebiscite emerged as the suggested avenue to gauge taxpayer support for this ambitious endeavor, and it passed with an overwhelming 89% approval rate. Encouraged by this robust show of support, the provincial government formally declared the establishment of Fraser Valley College on April 4, 1974.

ABOUT

Studying at University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) in Canada:

The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), formerly identified as University College of the Fraser Valley and Fraser Valley College, stands as a Canadian public academic institution dispersed across Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission, and Hope in British Columbia. Emerged in 1974 as Fraser Valley College, its inception mirrored the imperative for broadened vocational instruction within the Fraser Valley’s communal fabric.

In 1988, an elevation to university college stature transpired, thereby acquiring the authority to confer degrees. Under the banner of the University College of the Fraser Valley, a swift proliferation ensued, propelling it into the ranks of Canada’s foremost university colleges. With a discernment of the burgeoning demand for tertiary education locally and provincially, the governmental echelons bestowed full-fledged university recognition on April 21, 2008. Presently, student enrollment surpasses the 15,000 mark annually. Within the 2010 edition of The Globe and Mail Canadian University Report, UFV clinched the most “A Range” distinctions amongst British Columbia’s post-secondary institutions, securing A grades for educational caliber, student-educator engagement, and administrative efficiency.
