history
The University of Houston has a long and proud history of academic excellence, dating all the way back to its beginnings in 1927. Initially known as Houston Junior College, its main focus at the time was on training future teachers, and classes were held at the San Jacinto High School campus.
As the years went by, the university grew and prospered, officially becoming the University of Houston in 1934. Just two years later, they secured land for a permanent campus, and in 1939, they opened their first building. In 1947, the university adopted the cougar as its official mascot, naming it Shasta, a tradition that still stands today. The university gained state institution status in 1963 and became part of the newly formed University of Houston System in 1977.
