history
Tulane University, known officially as the Tulane University of Louisiana, is a prestigious research institution located in the vibrant city of New Orleans, Louisiana. Established in 1834 as the Medical College of Louisiana by a group of ambitious young medical doctors, it underwent a transformation in 1847 when the state legislature designated it as the University of Louisiana, encompassing a wide range of academic disciplines.
In a pivotal moment for the university’s history, Tulane University transitioned to a private institution in the late 19th century, thanks to the generous endowments from two philanthropists: Paul Tulane and Josephine Louise Newcomb. In 1884, Paul Tulane’s endowment played a significant role in enabling the university to become a private entity, while Josephine Louise Newcomb’s endowment further bolstered its growth in 1887.
