history

Already in 1897, the first nursing students in Jönköping received their qualifications by Jönköping County. In 1947 an elementary-school teacher’s training college was set up and in 1963 a pre-school teacher’s training college started here. In the Statement of Government Policy of 1991, the elect government had stated their ambition to create more autonomous institutions of higher education. Jönköping University College and Chalmers University of Technology were given the opportunity to be set up as state universities. Jönköping University Foundation (JU) was founded on 1 July 1994.

Jönköping University has around 12,000 students, of which 1,850 are international students. The university is one of the top universities in international student exchange and among the best in Sweden in terms of attracting international students. Campus has a truly international and academic environment with students and staff from all parts of the world.

 

Campus and facilities at Jönköping University in Sweden:

The JU Campus is situated in the city center of Jönköping, on the western shore of the lake Munksjön and not far from the south shore of the lake Vättern, about five minutes’ walk from the Central Station. Parking is available both on campus and near the university. It also has Restaurants and coffee shops on campus. There, you will find Campus Arena, which is the University’s own sports center.

 

Language requirements for applying to Jönköping University in Sweden:

All applicants to programmes (and summer courses) are required to meet the Standard English language requirements corresponding to English 6 in the Swedish upper secondary school system.

Everyone can meet the requirement by achieving the required score on an internationally recognized English test. Completed upper secondary and university studies in some countries can also fulfill the requirement.

Jönköping University offers a great selection of programmes within many different areas of interest. Programmes such as International Economics, New Media Design and Sustainable Enterprise Development in Bachelor and also Digital Business (Two Years), International Financial Analysis as Master’s programmes. Scholarships offered at Jönköping University in Sweden:

Jönköping University (JU) offers a limited number of scholarships to students who pay tuition fees and who fulfil the requirements of the scholarship and are assessed to be able to complete their studies adequately. The scholarship amount is equivalent to 30% of the tuition fee for the programme the student has been admitted to.

During 2014 Jönköping University started a number of national collaborative projects in order to strengthen strategic interactivity between universities and society in Sweden.

 

Other costs:

  • As a part of the accommodation application process an administrative fee of 700 SEK is required.
  • Students pay for housing, literature, and other living expenses themselves. These costs are estimated to be about 9,000-10,000 SEK per month. Students from outside the EU must obtain a student visa (Residence Permit), for which they must show that they can afford the living expenses in Sweden during their studies.

All new international students are guaranteed accommodation, provided that they apply for accommodation correctly, pay the administrative fee and announce their arrival in time. The guarantee only applies to admitted students at Jönköping University. Family members are not included in the guarantee.

  • A one-time charge of 300 SEK is added on the first rent in most accommodation for the provision of a duvet and a pillow.
