Studying at Xiamen University in China:
Xiamen University (XMU), established in 1921 by renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah Kee, is the first university founded by an overseas Chinese in the history of modern Chinese education. XMU has long been listed among China’s leading universities on the national 211 Project, 985 Project and Double First-Class Initiative, which have been launched by the Chinese government to support selected universities in achieving world-class standing.
Campus and facilities at Xiamen University:
Nestled snugly between green hills and the blue sea, XMU is renowned as China’s most beautiful university for its excellent education facilities and beautiful environment.
- Siming Campus: Siming Campus is located in Siming District, Xiamen, covering an area of 167 hectares. It mainly houses such academic divisions as the Humanities and Arts, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Engineering and Technology.
- Zhangzhou Campus: Zhangzhou Campus is located in Zhangzhou China Merchants Economic and Technological Development Zone (CMZD), Zhangzhou, covering an area of 171 hectares. It houses XMU Tan Kah Kee College, Institute of Creativity and Innovation, International College, and other platforms for scientific and technological innovation.
- Xiang’an Campus: Xiang’an Campus is located in Xiang’an District, Xiamen, covering an area of 243 hectares. It mainly houses such academic divisions as Medicine and Life Sciences, Earth Sciences and Technology, and newly emerging disciplines and applied disciplines. It also houses the Southern Base of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Institute of Confucius Institute Directors.
- Malaysia Campus: Upon the invitation of the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education to set up a branch campus in Malaysia, Xiamen University accepted the offer and thus, Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) was born.
Language requirements for applying to Xiamen University:
Applicants should present a TOEFL iBT certificate with a score of 80 or above, or an IELTS Academic certificate with an overall score of 6.0. XMU’s DI Code for TOEFL is C310. Applicants who have taken all courses in English during their high school studies are exempt from the TOEFL iBT or IELTS certificate requirement, but a English-as-medium-of-instruction certificate from the high school should be furnished. Native English speakers are exempt from this requirement.

XMU currently has a faculty of over 3,000 full-time teachers and researchers, of whom 32 are the members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

The international student apartments on the Siming campus offer 2-person rooms, with daily accommodation fees per bed ranging from RMB 30 to RMB 70. Students on the Xiang’an campus will be accommodated in suites, each of which comprises 4 double-rooms. The accommodation fee is RMB 1600-4000 per academic year. International students accommodating on campus are required to pay the water and electricity fees in accordance with the University’s regulations. Recipients of Chinese Government Scholarships or Confucius Institute Scholarships that cover on-campus accommodation fee, if they give up free on-campus accommodation and choose to live off campus, can apply for accommodation subsidy.
- Off-Siming campus accommodation:
Students who fail to secure on-campus accommodation are expected to arrange for their off-campus accommodation on their own before their arrival. The monthly rental of apartments near the Siming campus is around RMB 2,500 per room.
