Sichuan University was formed through two mergers of the former Sichuan University, the former Chengdu University of Science and Technology, and the former West China Medical University. The original Sichuan University was founded in 1896 by Lu Chuanlin, governor of Sichuan, under the special order of Guangxu. The former West China Medical University originated from the West China Union University founded by the Western Christian Church in Chengdu in 1910. It is the earliest Western-style university in Southwest China and one of the earliest universities to train graduate students in China.
West China Medical Center of Sichuan University, is located in Chengdu, Sichuan, China, and is administered by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. The medical center was founded in 1910 and it merged with Sichuan University in 2000.

Studying at Sichuan University in China:
Sichuan University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. It is a high-level research-oriented comprehensive university that is a key construction of the country’s layout in western China. It is a national “double first-class” construction university (category A). Sichuan University is located in Chengdu, a famous historical and cultural city in China – the “Land of Abundance”. It has three campuses in Wangjiang, Huaxi and Jiang’an, covering an area of 7,050 mu, with a building area of 2,806,400 square meters.
West China Medical Center of Sichuan University has won 243 Ministerial and Provincial prizes with 19 patent rights. 1700 research papers were published out of which 600 were published in international journals. The School is authorized to confer doctoral degrees in the two primary disciplines of Clinical Medicine and Integrated Western-Chinese Medicine. Clinical Medicine at WCSM ranked 5th and Integrated Western-Chinese Medicine ranked 3rd nationwide in the 2008 Primary Discipline Evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education. The School’s teaching excellence has been recognized in nine disciplines by the Central government, and in 26 disciplines by the provincial government.
Campus and facilities at Sichuan University in China:
Sichuan University’s three campuses are located in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province. The older Wangjiang (望江) campus is in central Chengdu, adjacent to the Jinjiang River and its tributary the Jiang’an River. The nearby Huaxi (华西) campus is the site of the medical school. The Jiang’an (江安) campus was built in 2003 in Shuangliu County about 12.5 km away from the older campuses; it covers an area of about 4.7 km2 and has total floorage of more than 2.7 million m2. New attending students (most of them) will spend their first and second year in Jiang’an Campus (the newest campus) and then moving to Wangjiang campus for the rest of their college years.
The university has four libraries containing ca. 5.5 million volumes in total. The libraries also serve as the Collection Center for English Publications under the National Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Ministry of Education Information Center for Liberal Arts Literature and CALIS Southwest Sub-center. The National University Scientific and Technological Projects and Achievements Consulting Center, and Center for Medical Literature Retrieval in Southwest China are served by the SCU library as well.
The university museum is the only one of its kind in China with a comprehensive collection of over 40,000 cultural relics, and over 600,000 animal and plant specimens, ranking first in its holdings among the others in China.
The university stadium is fully equipped and served as the main field for the Sixth National Collegiate Sports Meet. Other facilities available include a campus web center, an analytic and testing center, university archives, the university press, a national foreign language examination center and intensive language training center, four attached hospitals, and one attached health school. The university publishes 37 academic periodicals for domestic and overseas audience.
West China Medical Center of Sichuan University is located in Huaxi Campus which is famous for the beautiful environment. The Huaxi Bell Tower in the campus is the landmark of the Huaxi Dam. The educational facilities and living facilities are well-equipped for students. The campus is in simple and elegant style and is honored as one of the most beautiful campuses in China.

Majors taught in English:
- Applicants who are native speakers of English are exempt from English proficiency certificates.
- Applicants who are not native speakers of English must provide a TOEFL certificate (scored 80 or above), or IELTS certificate (scored 6.0 or above), or other certificates demonstrating an equivalent level of English proficiency.
- Applicants who are not native speakers of English but acquired their highest degree through a program taught in English can provide, instead of an IELTS/TOEFL certificate, a certificate demonstrating the program was taught in English.

Sichuan University has a complete range of disciplines, covering 12 disciplines including arts, science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, law, history, philosophy, agriculture, education, and art. There are 36 discipline-based colleges (departments) and overseas education colleges, etc. college. There are 49 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 38 professional degree authorization points, and 39 postdoctoral mobile stations. The school currently has more than 37,000 full-time ordinary undergraduates, more than 29,000 master and doctoral students, and nearly 3,000 foreign students and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

Full scholarship (including tuition, accommodation, living allowance and comprehensive medical insurance premium) of Sichuan University (hereinafter referred to as SCU) provided by China Scholarship Council (hereinafter referred to as CSC) is intended to aid the distinguished youth students selected and enrolled directly by the SCU for their study in China. This project is for master’s students and doctoral students only. Applicants should submit their applications straightly to the International Student Office of the SCU; the time for application is generally from early January to March 30.

Sichuan University provides dormitories for international students in Wangjiang, Huaxi, and Jiang’an campuses with 24-hour services to make students feel at home. SCU Overseas Students Office arranges full-time staff to assist the work of the Dormitory Administration Office to resolve problems students encounter in daily life timely. Due to the limited amount of rooms, students admitted by Sichuan University should file an application for on-campus dormitories. Students can also find an apartment outside the campus based on their own needs.
