history
In 1901, the Imperial Governor of Shandong, Yuan Shikai, submitted the “The Existing Constitution of Tentative Establishment of a College in Shandong” for Emperor Guangxu’s royal approval. Six public specialist schools in Shandong province were merged and subsequently the Shandong Provincial University was established in Jinan city in 1926.
The National Qingdao University was established on Sept 20, 1930. Yang Zhensheng was appointed as president by the Kuomintang government. The National Qingdao University was renamed the National Shandong University in Qingdao, with Zhao Taimou as president in 1932.
Shandong University merged with East China University in 1951 and retained its name of Shandong University. Shandong University resumed its original administrative structure in 1974 and the Shandong University of Science and Technology was abolished. And 2000 was Merger of Shandong University with Shandong Medical University and Shandong University of Technology

Shandong University is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education with a long history, complete disciplines, strong strength and distinctive features. It has important influence at home and abroad. In 2017, it successfully entered the ranks of world-class university construction universities (Class A). Its medical discipline originated in 1864, which opened a precedent for modern Chinese higher medical education.

- Qingdao Campus and Weihai Campus in three different cities (Jinan, Qingdao and Weihai), covering an area of over 533 hectares (including 200 hectares of the Qingdao campus).
The university currently has 4 affiliated hospitals, 15 non-subordinate affiliated hospitals. Its full-time student population totals up to 70,000, of which 42,268 are full-time undergraduates, 26,818 are postgraduates and 1,560 are international students. It also has an excellent faculty team of 1,246 professors, including 897 doctoral supervisors.
There are 19 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Academy of Engineering (double-hired academicians included), 40 Chair Professors of Cheung Kong Scholars Program, 5 winners of the Youth Project, 53 winners of the “National Outstanding Youth Foundation” award and 29 winners of the “Outstanding Youth Science Foundation” award. The university boasts 12 state scientific research platforms, four key social science research bases approved by the Ministry of Education, and a large number of provincial key laboratories and provincial engineering technology research centers.

The applicants planning to study in China must have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in their curriculum at the 10+2 Level. Clearing NEET is essential with qualifying marks. Good fluency in English is required.

Shandong University is a comprehensive university in China with full-fledged academic disciplines. There are at present 12 general disciplines for undergraduates and postgraduates, namely philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and fine arts.
There are 44 first-level doctoral programs, 51 first-level master’s degree programs, 93 programs for undergraduates and 42 post-doctoral research programs, forming a complete system for cultivation of talent. 18 disciplines are ranked in the top 1% of ESI Global Ranking in terms of academic influence and contribution capacity. Moreover, inter-school partnership has been forged with more than 200 schools in over 30 countries and regions.
Scholarships offered at The University of Oslo:
The purpose of Shandong University Scholarship for International Students (hereinafter refers to SDU Scholarship) is to financially support outstanding new international students for pursuing their degree programs at SDU. Every year, a number of outstanding undergraduates, masters and doctoral students are selected as winners.
The Eligibilities for getting the scholarship are:
- Applicants must be a citizen of a country other than the People’s Republic of China and be in good mental and physical health.
- Applicants must hold a high school graduate or an equivalent qualification and be under the age of 25 when applying for Bachelor programs;
- Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification and be under the age of 35 when applying for Master programs;
- Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification and be under the age of 40 when applying for Ph.D. programs.
- Applicants must have an excellent academic performance and strong scientific research skills.
- Applicants cannot be awarded any other scholarship funded by the Chinese government during the period of receiving the SDU Scholarship.

Shandong University is committed to creating a safe and well-maintained environment that promotes community values and fosters comfort. In Jinan, international student apartments are in three of the six campuses. In Qingdao campus the university also provides international students with suitable accommodations. Each apartment is nicely furnished and equipped with a heating and air conditioning unit and other needed utilities.
Admitted students who have received their admission notice and are interested in living on-campus must apply first. The earliest date to move-in is three days before the registration date stated on your admission notice; otherwise, the university will not accommodate your early arrival.
All international students should pay a deposit fee of 600 RMB for the accommodation when checking-in. The student will get this fee returned when leaving the room without damaging it. The monthly accommodation fee may depend on the campus and dorm type. On-campus internet is free.
after graduation
At present, Shandong University has about one hundred local alumni organizations, serving more than three hundred thousand alumni at home and abroad. For those who wish to stay in China after study:
- A passport application can take a long time so it should be done well in advance. You can consult your country’s embassy or consulate for more information.
- After collecting a new passport, students need to register at police station and apply for a change of visa/residence permit from school as soon as possible.
The school will help you to submit the documents to the office of the Department of International Affairs. After the approval of the university, you need to go to the Exit & Entry Administration Bureau of Jinan Public Security Bureau with relevant documents.
