history
Nanjing Medical University was founded in 1934. It was then known as Jiangsu Provincial College of Health Policy and Management and its first president was Mr. Chen Guofu. In 1938 the college was renamed National Jiangsu Medical College. In 1957 the college was moved from Zhenjiang to Nanjing and renamed Nanjing Medical College. In 1962 it became one of the first medical colleges in China that offered six-year medical education programs. In 1981 the college was approved to confer doctoral and master’s degrees. In 1993 the college was renamed Nanjing Medical University. Today it is a key university of Jiangsu Province. In September 2015, NMU has been approved to be one of the first groups of medical universities which are co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education, National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People’s Republic of China and Jiangsu Provincial People’s government.
ABOUT
Studying at Nanjing Medical University:
The university consists of twenty-two schools and one independent school (Kangda School). It has twenty-four affiliated hospitals and more than fifty teaching hospitals in Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Shandong Provinces. Presently the university has more than 1600 employees, including 825 skilled teaching staff, 188 professors, 252 associate professors, 422 doctoral supervisors and 1746 master tutors (including people from the affiliated hospitals).
Among them, there is one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one foreign academician of Institute of Medicine at the American National Academy of Sciences, three “Cheung Kong Scholar” Distinguished Visiting Professors, one young scholar of the “Cheung Kong Scholar Incentive Plan”, one leading talent of the “Ten Thousand Talents Plan”, seven recruited global experts from the National “Thousand Talent” Program, seven winners of the China National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists, eight winners of the Outstanding Youth Fund, one winner of the National Award for Distinguished Teachers, seven winners of the funds from New Century Excellent Talent Support Program of the Ministry of Education, three “State-Level Teaching Teams”, and one “Innovation Team” from the Ministry of Education.
Campus and facilities at Nanjing Medical University:
The university has two campuses, Wutai and Jiangning. Jiangning Campus, located in the university town in Jiangning, Nanjing, has a land area of eighty-seven hectares and is a center of administration, teaching and research.Wutai Campus, located at the south foot of Wutai Hill in Gulou District, Nanjing, has a land area of eight hectares and is a center of clinical teaching and research. With more than 1,080, 000 printed medical resources, more than 1,500,000 e-resources and over 6,000 journals in a variety of languages, the university library boasts a vast collection of resources that makes it a center of medical literature in Jiangsu province. NMU is also responsible for publishing 11 academic journals.

Language requirements for applying to Nanjing Medical University:
Transcripts of the most advanced studies (notarized photocopy): Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized translations in Chinese or English.
Courses offered at Nanjing Medical University:
The university now has eight first-level discipline doctoral programs (basic medicine, clinical medicine, dental medicine, public health and preventive medicine, pharmacy, special medicine, nursing, humanistic medicine), fifty second-level discipline doctoral programs, eleven first-level discipline master’s programs, seventy-three second-level discipline master’s programs and seven postdoctoral research stations. Options for discipline programs have crossed the boundaries between medicine, science, engineering, management, law, education and literature.
It also has three state-level key disciplines, one key discipline for state-level cultivation, 28 national clinical key specialties, two programs of state key discipline (first-level disciplines of Jiangsu) of cultivation and construction, and three key Jiangsu first-level disciplines. Five disciplines – Clinical Medicine, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Biology & Biochemistry, Neuroscience & Behavior and Pharmacology & Toxicology have ranked among the top 1% disciplines around the world according to ESI. Four disciplines of the university – namely basic medicine, public health and preventive medicine, clinical medicine, and dental medicine – are Strong Disciplines among Jiangsu colleges and universities.

Nanjing Medical University offers international students well equipped on-campus accommodation. There are two campuses in Nanjing Medical University: Jiangning Campus (the campus where international students study medicine for the first year to the fourth year) and Wutai Campus (the campus where international students study medicine for the fifth year). Special international student dormitories are provided to overseas students in both campuses. All rooms are equipped with air conditioner, water heater, bed, wardrobe, desk and network interface. The well-equipped dormitory building executes hotel style management.
The hostel building in Jiangning Campus was built in 2011. Building No.7 is the international students’ dormitory. Double room which laid floor with attached toilet and bathroom is available to international students. Each floor is equipped with a small student activity room. On the first floor, there is a medium student activity room, public laundry room and Office for International Students. Building No.9 has guest hotel where the students’ relatives and friends can live in.
The international student apartment in Wutai campus was built in 2007. There is an elevator running 24 hours a day. Double room and three-bed rooms are available to international students. Roommate could be assigned by the University or chosen by the student after reaching the University. Separate floor accommodations are provided for male and female students. Each room is equipped with independent bathroom and food counter. The international student apartment is equipped with advanced electronic monitoring equipment and high quality property management. Students living in school dormitories should observe Regulations on International Students Dormitory Management. Anyone who violates the regulations shall be penalized accordingly.

Nanjing Medical University enrolls international undergraduates on MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery) program, with English as medium of teaching. The study duration of MBBS program is 6 years (including 1-year internship). Graduates who reach the qualification of graduation will be awarded “Diploma Certification” and graduates who reach the qualification of the Degree Rule will be awarded the Bachelor Degree of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery, MBBS.
