Structure

Content

The optional modules listed are those that are most likely to be available, but they may be subject to change. 

You will study:

  • Insurance Practice – This module introduces you to the three main business functions that make up the insurance market: underwriting, broking, and claims. It covers aspects such as regulatory frameworks, underwriting risk evaluation and pricing, agency and risk transfer, client relationships, settlement negotiation and identifying fraudulent claims.
  • Insurance Business Environment – This module aims to provide you with the essential underpinnings in economics, law and finance to understand and operate in the insurance marketplace. This includes the role and impact of the industry in the national and global economy, the legal structures underpinning insurance contractual liabilities and the regulatory, financial and ethical requirements within which insurance businesses operate.
  • Insurance Risk Management – This module provides a fundamental understanding of risk and risk management processes in the operational context of insurance business. This understanding is underpinned with the key theoretical models of risk management and applied in operational examples to understand and evaluate the effectiveness of decision making in practice. Real examples drawn from industry will be used to illustrate and challenge risk decisions and encourage critical evaluation of risk management applications in insurance business contexts.
  • Strategic Leadership in Insurance – This module provides a fundamental understanding of strategic leadership, planning and development, strategic business relationship management and leadership behaviours in the operational context of insurance businesses. Real examples drawn from industry will be used to illustrate and challenge leaders’ decisions and encourage critical evaluation of leadership in insurance business contexts.
  • Applied Project in Insurance – The project is designed to allow you to focus on a particular aspect of insurance risk management theory or practice to carry out an in-depth study with practical relevance to the contemporary insurance industry. You will be given opportunities to interact with industry to help generate your research question and will present your project proposal to a mixed academic and industry panel.

Plus, one optional module from:

  • Environmental Risk Management 
  • Technological Innovation in Insurance
  • International Financial Crime.

This structure is for full-time students only. Part-time students study the same modules but the delivery pattern will be different.

Study time

Expect 12 hours a week of formal class contact time, with additional hours of private study, to prepare for class, carry out research, and attend networking events and field trips.

Entry requirements

You will need:

  • an honours degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.

English language support

If you meet the academic requirements but require additional support to take your language skills to the required level, you may be able to attend one of our pre-sessional English courses. Students who successfully complete the pre-sessional course can progress onto their chosen degree course without retaking an IELTS or equivalent.

English Language Requirement

If English is not your first language, you will be required to meet the UK Border Agency and Universities minimum English Language requirements such as the International English Language Test (IELTS) overall score of 6.5 with 5.5 in each component.

Deadlines: for 2022

  • Thursday 19 May – If you applied by 26 January and you are still waiting, universities will decide whether they are making an offer by today (otherwise UCAS will reject the application on their behalf). You will then be given a deadline by UCAS to make your decision.
  • Thursday 9 June – If you receive all your uni/college decisions by 19 May, you must reply to any offers by today (except if you are using Extra to find a place), otherwise they’ll be declined.

  • Thursday 30 June – This is the last day you can apply to university for 2022 entry before Clearing begins. If you send your first application (not UCAS Extra) to UCAS by 18:00, they’ll send it to your chosen university.

  • Monday 4 July – Last date to apply in UCAS Extra.
  • Tuesday 5 July – Clearing opens for applications if you already have your results.
  • Thursday 14 July – If you applied by 30 June and you’re still awaiting a decision from any of your choices, universities have until 14 July to decide whether they’re making you an offer (including Extra choices).
  • Thursday 18 August – A-level results day. Fingers crossed you got the grades you’re hoping for. If not, don’t panic – there are options including Clearing. We will confirm our decision by email.
  • Once your place is confirmed and you have completed all admissions requirements you’ll receive your username so you can register online.
