Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) is the surgical specialty concerned with the surgical management of pathologies of the mouth, jaws and face. It is a unique specialty, requiring a dual qualification in medicine and dentistry, followed by a comprehensive general and specialist surgical training programme; and is one of ten internationally recognized surgical specialties, which within Europe is defined under the medical directives. The programme reflects the surgical specialty in that its focus is on management of head and neck malignancy, advanced head and neck reconstruction, paediatric deformity (cleft and craniofacial), adult deformity (craniofacial, orthognathic and aesthetic), oral surgery, TMJ and the management of facial trauma.

This MSc programme in OMFS is specifically developed for surgeons training in that specialty who are at Higher Speciality training level or above (UK) or equivalent (EU/International). It is of blended delivery in order to accommodate the professional and clinical demands of the specialist trainees and aligns well for individuals with an existing postgraduate clinical training programme.

The educational aims are around skills, knowledge and professional development:
1. To equip the OMFS higher surgical trainee with an in-depth knowledge and robust understanding of the expert skills and competence required to fulfil the role of an OMFS surgical specialist.
2. To facilitate the development of a surgical specialist with knowledge and understanding of relevant policies, procedures and research and an ability to critically analyse these in order to improve practice.
3. To promote the development of a surgical specialist with the advanced clinical reasoning, problem solving, and communication skills required to practise safely and effectively in the speciality of OMFS.

The programme is led by Professor Richard Shaw (pathway academic lead) and supported by module leads, each of whom are either NHS consultants in OMFS or university academics with equivalent honorary NHS status. Each clinical module lead has a specific clinical and research interest in the relevant subspecialty and is supported by a large faculty. The course content is delivered by a wider group of multidisciplinary clinicians and scientists including OMFS, ENT, dentistry, neurosurgery, anaesthetics, plastic surgery, speech and language therapy, paediatrics, oncology and pathology.

Our programme here at Liverpool University is the only programme for this surgical speciality in the UK, and we think also unique internationally. Our approach is unique as we have deconstructed the requirements for the Royal College of Surgeons Specialist Training Programme for this surgical speciality and then mapped it to the University postgraduate modular framework. The existing modules are highly popular with students as the combination of enhanced teaching and feedback from formative assessments, which mirror those of the UK Intercollegiate FRCS final examinations for OMFS.

Module details

Please note that the modules for this programme are currently being reviewed and details will be available here soon.

Students who wish to register for an individual postgraduate module for the purpose of continuing professional development (CPD) will not be registered on the programme. However, accrued CPD credits can normally be transferred into the programme for a formal award. Application for accreditation of credits from other Higher Education Institutions can also be considered, up to a maximum of 60 credits for the MSc.

Entry requirements

For registration as PGCert/PGDip/MSc candidates will normally be in training in an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) surgical training programme. Normally, a dual qualification, notably a medical and dental degree from a recognised University will be required. For those not within such a programme, evidence of support that the student will have access to an appropriate clinical working environment will be requested.

Candidates require an IELTS score of 7.0 (with a minimum score of 7.0 in each section of the test) or equivalent in other English Language test.

International qualifications

International qualifications will be evaluated in line with the National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) guidelines.

English language qualifications

This is a linguistically demanding programme and students whose first language is not English are required to have passed the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) examination before commencing the programme. The IELTS reading and writing tests taken by candidates must be the Academic Reading and Academic Writing tests. If you require additional English Language training during your study, the University is able to provide tuition and arrange IELTS tests through its English Language Centre.

This course will only consider IELTS scores (other Secure English Language tests or Country specific tests such as WAEC or Malaysian SPM 1119 are not suitable for this programme).

Please be advised that TOEFL is no longer classified by UK Visas and Immigration as a Secure English Language Test (SELT). However, at the current time the university is continuing to accept TOEFL, at the required level, for entry on to Undergraduate and Postgraduate academic programmes.

Fees cover the cost of your tuition, registration, examinations (but not re-sits) and graduation.
