Overview
The MA in Political Science and International Relations provides extensive postgraduate training in research methods, application of political concepts and theories, skills, and the development of an advanced understanding of politics and political science more broadly. The MA enhances employability of graduates through skills training, alongside training for potential doctoral research.
The MA offers a range of optional modules that enables you to specialise or generalise in key areas of political studies including British Politics, International Relations, Political Theory, and Comparative Politics. The MA also provides comprehensive methods training to equip you with the skills required for doctoral research, and/or a wide range of careers in fields such as journalism, business, the Civil Service, Central Government, Local Government, charities, and education.
Module details
Programme Structure
The Political Science and International Relations MA has one required module in each semester, and a wide range of optional modules to select from to facilitate specialisation/generalisation. The structure of the programme is:
Substantive Research Project (Throughout, submission in September)
POLI521 Political Science Dissertation (required, 60 Credits)
Semester One
POLI520 Political Science Research Methods (required, 15 credits)

Semester Two
POLI522 Political Science and International Relations (required, 15 credits)

This will give you a total of 180 credits required for successful completion of the MA.

The MA includes a dedicated optional 15 credit placement opportunity in semester two in local government, business, voluntary sector, charities, Civil Service, or political party.

Learning and Assessments
The MA is delivered via a combination of lectures, seminars, and online activities alongside supervision of the Masters thesis.
Independent research and study will be required for successful completion of the modules alongside reading and archival research. Seminars are student-led which include debates, discussions, and activities which underscores the learning strategies.
Module coursework comprises of a range of assessment methods that provide authentic measures of student learning. These include presentations, essays, briefing papers, portfolios, amongst others.
Entry requirements
You will need a good 2:1 Bachelor’s degree in Politics/International Relations studies or in a broadly related discipline (eg classics, history, philosophy, sociology, English, modern languages etc.).
International qualifications
Applications from international students are encouraged and international qualifications will be evaluated in line with the National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) guidelines.
English language qualifications
All applicants must have reached a minimum required standard of English language and are required to provide evidence of this.If you meet the academic requirements of the course but do not have the required level of English Language, it is possible for you to come and study at the University on one of our Pre-sessional EAP programmes.If you require additional English Language training during your study, the University is able to provide tuition and arrange IELTS tests through its English Language Centre.

Please be advised that TOEFL is no longer classified by UK Visas and Immigration as a Secure English Language Test (SELT). However, at the current time the university is continuing to accept TOEFL, at the required level, for entry on to Undergraduate and Postgraduate academic programmes.

Tuition fees (Home)
The University’s tuition fees are normally fixed at yearly intervals and follow Government guidelines on minimum levels. The normal tuition fee for Home (UK) postgraduate taught students per year (for the academic year 2022/23, unless otherwise specified) are stated below. Please note that part-time fees are charged at 50% of the full-time fee shown below per year (unless otherwise specified).

The Political Science and International Relations MA delivers political science training that is ideal if you are considering an academic career such as doctoral research. It is recommended that if you are considering doctoral research that you consider opting to take POLI510 Quantitative Methods and World Politics in semester two to develop your research methods skills further.
The MA also provides a solid foundation for broader careers in education, media, third sector industries, the Civil Service, central/local government, or business. If you have a professional background in any of these (or other relevant) areas, the MA provides you with the opportunity for continuing professional development, whilst enabling you to bring your experiences to the cohort which will further enrich the programme. The Political Science MA also offers an opportunity to enhance your skills for a wide range of employment and professional fields, especially where communication, collaborative working, critical thinking and research are key components of the role.
The required modules (POLI520 Political Science Research Methods and POLI522 Political Science and International Relations) equip you with advanced training in conducting advanced political science research (POLI520) and an advanced examination of politics and international relations (POLI522). All modules are designed to enhance confidence and digital fluency, and foster skills such as organisation, teamwork, time management, personal initiative, and responsibility. All of these will be transferrable to future work environments within the UK, Europe, and globally.

This university offers accommodation to all the international students and has over 4,500 rooms in the city campus or the Greenbank Student Village, also the students can benefit from a living in a safe, clean, and comfortable environment with excellent full-time support from the University of Liverpool staff in dormitories and student halls, however, the applicants must apply for accommodation as soon as possible at the time of application, even before starting the classes because the students can get a great room based on a first-come, first-served basis, also the students can use complete facilities like desk, bed, shower, wifi, kitchen, and so on in all the Liverpool campus halls like the Crown place, Dover Court, Melville Grove, Vine Court, and so on.
After Graduation
The students are allowed to work while studying at this university, but the hours depend on their mode of education, and the free time that they have per week, also the international applicants’ work permit depends on their visas, therefore, they can check their visas to find out if they are allowed to work in this country, furthermore, the students received their visas from outside the UK, their visas should have “work must be authorized” or any other phrase meaning the same thing, also the applicants who extend their visas in the UK and have an ID card must be able to see “Restricted Work P/T term time. F/T vacations” on their renewed permit.
Overall, the full-time students can work for up to 20 hours per week, however, the University of Liverpool recommends that the students work for at most 15 hours per week and focus on their studies to get better results at this university, also the students can work full-time during their university vacation time to save money for their study and living expenses in the future, moreover, if the students get good results in their studies, they can get a scholarship or fund to help them pay for their tuition fee, furthermore, the students can find a proper and related job by using the local newspapers, website, or the careers and employment service website of the University of Liverpool.
