Overview

Focusing on translation and interpreting between two of the world’s major languages, Chinese and English, this exciting master’s programme provides well-balanced practical training in translation and interpreting (consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting, sight translation and public service interpreting), covering a variety of topics. The programme also familiarises students with theoretical insights and methodological approaches that are integral to the field of translation and interpreting.

Through this master’s programme, you will:

  • gain hands-on skills in practical translation and interpreting, covering different modes (written translation, sight translation, simultaneous, consecutive and public service interpreting) and across various topics (e.g. politics, business, commerce, media, culture, technology and literature);
  • explore major theoretical approaches and core methodologies in translation and interpreting studies
  • have the flexibility to choose between a traditional theory-based dissertation and a practice-based translation project as your graduation project;
  • acquire useful transferrable skills (e.g. public speaking, intercultural communication, academic writing, active listening, critical thinking and analytical skills) for a successful career in translation and interpreting and beyond (e.g. in such fields as media, journalism, business, education, advertisement as well as governments and organisations)
  • be equipped with the research skills necessary for further study at a PhD level, should you wish to pursue a career in academia.

Module details

The modules cover significant theoretical elements concerning the major trends, themes and methodological approaches in translation and interpreting studies, as well as essential practical elements that equip you with hands-on translation and interpreting skills.

The practice-oriented translation and interpreting modules span across a variety of modes and different specialised text genres and topics.

The modules will prepare you for your individual graduation projects, for which you may choose between a dissertation or a translation project (extended translation and commentary/critical analysis)

Entry requirements

The normal requirement for entry on to a taught programme is a BA or BSc degree of 2:1 standard in a subject relevant to the proposed field of research.

All eligible applicants should normally have a good undergraduate degree in a relevant area relating to modern languages (a 2:1 honours degree or equivalent). Applicants with other specialised backgrounds or relevant professional experience may also be considered.

Applicants with English as a second language should have a good IELTS score of at least 7.0 overall (with no less than 6.5 in any sub-score) for admission to the MA programme.

Applicants with Chinese as a second language should have proficiency in Chinese (equivalent to the skills of HSK level 5).

International qualifications

Applications from international students are welcome. International qualifications will be evaluated in line with the National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) guidelines.

English language qualifications

All applicants must have reached a minimum required standard of English language and are required to provide evidence of this.If you meet the academic requirements of the course but do not have the required level of English Language, it is possible for you to come and study at the University on one of our Pre-sessional EAP programmes. If you require additional English Language training during your study, the University is able to provide tuition and arrange IELTS tests through its English Language Centre.

Please be advised that TOEFL is no longer classified by UK Visas and Immigration as a Secure English Language Test (SELT). However, at the current time the university is continuing to accept TOEFL, at the required level, for entry on to Undergraduate and Postgraduate academic programmes.

Fees cover the cost of your tuition, registration, examinations (but not re-sits) and graduation.

Tuition fees (Home)

The University’s tuition fees are normally fixed at yearly intervals and follow Government guidelines on minimum levels. The normal tuition fee for Home (UK) postgraduate taught students per year (for the academic year 2022/23, unless otherwise specified) are stated below.  Please note that part-time fees are charged at 50% of the full-time fee shown below per year (unless otherwise specified). 

In addition to your tuition fees, you may incur other costs in relation to your studies such as photocopying in the library, buying textbooks and specialist equipment or going on field classes.

Graduates may also pursue a successful career as translation and interpreting trainers or language teaching professionals in the education sector. The combination of theoretical and practical training on the MA programme also paves the way for advanced students wishing to conduct postgraduate research (e.g. PhD) in translation and interpreting studies.

After MA level study, students may also choose to sit professional qualification and certification examinations, for example, with the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) and the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) and join professional organisations, bodies and networks in translation and interpreting (e.g. ITI, NWTN, IATIS, ETS).

After Graduation

The students are allowed to work while studying at this university, but the hours depend on their mode of education, and the free time that they have per week, also the international applicants’ work permit depends on their visas, therefore, they can check their visas to find out if they are allowed to work in this country, furthermore, the students received their visas from outside the UK, their visas should have “work must be authorized” or any other phrase meaning the same thing, also the applicants who extend their visas in the UK and have an ID card must be able to see “Restricted Work P/T term time. F/T vacations” on their renewed permit.
Overall, the full-time students can work for up to 20 hours per week, however, the University of Liverpool recommends that the students work for at most 15 hours per week and focus on their studies to get better results at this university, also the students can work full-time during their university vacation time to save money for their study and living expenses in the future, moreover, if the students get good results in their studies, they can get a scholarship or fund to help them pay for their tuition fee, furthermore, the students can find a proper and related job by using the local newspapers, website, or the careers and employment service website of the University of Liverpool.
