Course content
This is an introductory course which concentrates on the following three main themes of modern molecular biology: DNA and Nucleic Acids- Basic methods of DNA analysis (including restriction enzymes and gel electrophoresis) Further analysis methods (Southern blots and (PCR)
- Polymerase Chain Reaction)
- Concepts of gene probes, hybridisation, gene libraries, cDNA and cloning
- Sequencing of DNA and its applications e.g. Human Genome
- Basic methods of protein analysis (including SDS-PAGE and 2-D gels)
- Further analysis methods (Western blotting, immunodetection)
- Concepts of proteomics and applications of two-dimensional gels
- Protein discovery and Proteomics
- Basic introduction to gene and protein databases
- Use of browsers to access information on DNA and Proteins
- Searching sequences over the internet
- Molecular modelling and three-dimensional protein structures
