Glass Art is a traditional craft which has enjoyed a resurgence of popularity in recent years, and is both traditional and contemporary at the same time. This course is intended for both newcomers to kiln-formed glass, as well as those with prior experience, and offers you the opportunity to explore the creative potential of glass as a creative material. You will be shown the processes of creating decorative pieces of glass using kiln-forming techniques, and learn how to make your own glass pieces. By the end of the course you will have made a range of glassware pieces from decorative wall panels and small pendants, to fruit bowls and coasters. You will have the knowledge of how to make glass pieces of your own if you want to continue exploring this creatively inspiring medium. Once you have acquired the skills it is possible to set up your own glass art facilities at home or in a studio. The course will cover:- The process of fusing glass – texture, pattern & inclusions.
- Health and safety when working with glass.
- Use colouring agents such as metal oxides, enamels and frits.
- Firing procedures and annealing cycles.
- Casting processes and slumping glass into or over a mould.
- How to use the sand blaster and other techniques for finishing.
- Screen printing on glass.

Please note that materials are not included within the fees for this course. Once you have booked a course you will be sent a materials list, with instructions about what to bring on your first day. Materials can be purchased from our School shop, or online. Where necessary or relevant, some specialist materials can be purchased from the staff during workshops.Booking Deadlines
Bookings for all Creative Arts Short Courses will be reviewed 2 weeks before the start date of each course. This will allow the Short Course team to determine whether a course has met the minimum number of students needed for the class to run. If a class has failed to recruit, the class will be re-scheduled and you will be informed. Where relevant you will be offered an alternative class. If the course has met minimum numbers, bookings will stay open to the course start date or until it has met maximum numbers. We encourage you to book early before the deadline to avoid disappointment. Bookings for all short courses need to be made online through the Universities’ online booking system, before a course commences. You cannot enrol or attend a class on the day the course starts, without prior arrangement.Where to find us
