Our two consecutive Pattern Cutting courses explore ‘block’ and ‘style’ which, between them, will teach you what you need to know to bring your own patterns to life. The two 12 week courses run consecutively to enable you to follow from one to the next, equipping you with all the skills to design your own clothes. You can take them in either order.Fashion – Pattern Cutting: Block
This first 12 week course will teach you how to create clothing patterns using a standard size 12 block. A block pattern (a term used in industrial production) is a custom-fitted, basic template from which patterns for many different styles of garment can be developed. Week by week, our professional tutor will take you through topics such as:- The basics of dart manipulation.
- Adapting darts to bodice style line.
- Adapting a standard size 12 skirt block to an A line skirt, circular, four gored and straight skirt.
- Learn how to draft patterns of different garment components, such as pocket, facing, placket, etc.
- Learn how to draft sleeve patterns such as Puff sleeve, sleeve with flare and Bishop sleeve.
- Learn how to draft different types of collars such as shirt collar, Peter Pan collar and a Mandarin collar.
- Adapting a standard size 12 trouser block to pleated trouser and jean.
Fashion – Pattern Cutting: Style
In this second 12 week course, the emphasis is on creating garments such as ladies’ trousers and dresses, and on producing different size blocks such as bodice blocks, sleeve blocks, skirt blocks and more, thinking about the structure and characteristics of different clothing items. Week by week, our professional tutor will take you through topics such as:- Learning the advanced technique of pattern manipulation and adaptation, as well as how to layout and cut fabric.
- Creating a Princess Line dress with facings and features such as sleeves and collars.
