This course develops expertise in systematic reviews through gaining practical skills in literature searching, information retrieval, and provides the opportunity to use electronic databases and appraisal systems, through supervised practice. You will be expected to challenge current practice by producing a systematic review of the literature and other relevant information and use critical and reflective skills to inform clinical decision making. This module includes practical sessions on the use of data analysis packages and advanced searches of on-line databases and other information sources. The course will Include the following:- Formulating appropriate research questions
- Retrieval of research evidence
- Efficient and systematic searching of databases
- Development of critical appraisal skills
- Transferring evidence into practice
- Cost effectiveness and its application to practice
- Key summary statistics and their use in evidence based decision making
- The use of evidence in clinical guideline and protocol development
- Policy Making and evidence.
- Dissemination of information
Assessment
You will be expected to complete a combination of coursework (including essay, portfolio and project work) OSCE clinical simulation assessment and presentations with supporting material. You will be expected to challenge current practice by producing a systematic review of the literature and other relevant information and use critical and reflective skills to inform clinical decision making.Teaching methods

This module is a distance learning module which only requires online attendance. This module will be taught by Maureen Brennan.Computer Equipment Requirement
Delivery of the module is entirely through e-learning activities. You need to have access to a suitable personal computer and a good reliable Internet connection (broadband recommended). Most modern PCs or Macs (less than 3 years old) should be suitable.
