We’ll teach you the fundamentals of global fashion communication. You’ll gain core skills and knowledge across branding and communication, art direction and styling, data and analytics, and visual communication. You’ll get the critical contexts behind these, and the intellectual space to understand fashion theory in context. Buying, Visual Merchandising, Data Merchandising, Styling, Digital and E-commerce, Social Media, Content Management, Fashion Editing, Art Direction, Data Analytics, Promotion. You want to study art and design philosophy. You want to explore the evolution of fashion through culture, technology and innovation. Why do we gender clothing? What’s the role of social media in global fashion? You’ll extend your knowledge of expressive and functional fashion, of people, and markets. You’ll delve into ethical issues facing the global fashion industry and challenge convention. What’s the true cost of fast fashion? We’ll encourage you to investigate how society responds to, and influences, the fashion world. You’ll critically approach a variety of topics as you delve into case studies. You’ll research, evaluate, and analyse design and texts. Most importantly, we’ll encourage you to form your own views. You’ll become a fashion creative and critical thinker who’s ready for the next design challenge and inspire your creations with impassioned thought-provoking research.
What’s the course about?
In the first year, you’ll gain core understanding of the fundamentals of global fashion communication, how it functions and the principles behind product and service communication methods. You will learn about the principles of art direction and styling and the role it plays in creating meaningful visual material for promotional campaigns. You will learn about international branding, understanding consumer markets and cultural nuances to be aware of. We will begin to develop your skills in impactful writing and how to identify good and relevant visual and written content. You will explore broad cultural critical contexts through fashion theory and be able to cross-pollinate knowledge gained with your specialist fashion communication learning. You will be introduced to data and how to analyse them and the role it plays in influencing communication strategies.
In your second year, you will hone the skills gained in year one and explore visual communication for fashion from both a print and digital perspective. You will learn about creating relevant and creative visual content for fashion brands. You will discover fashion editorial and how to write impactful communication copy for print and digital content. You will dive deeper into digital content management and gain insights into Content Management Systems (CMS), cutting edge technologies such as Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality and the role they play in understanding the micro and macro detail behind online and digital consumer buying behaviour and the channel mix. You will learn about the application of creative analytics in a fashion business and the types of content for different fashion markets and consumer applications. You will continue to study fashion theory through critical contexts and further explore the social, cultural, environmental, ethical and political debates and how they stimulate fashion communication strategies.
Between your second and final year, you will have the option to study abroad or do a work placement for a year. This will not only give you an amazing experience to talk about, but you’ll also boost your CV. If you’d rather go straight to your final year, that’s absolutely fine too.
In the third year, you’ll work with a greater level of independence. You will undertake a major study building upon all of your knowledge and skills gained over the past two years. You’ll put your skills to the test through a negotiated project capitalising on your strengths and areas of fashion communication that interest you. You will have the opportunity to further explore new methods and technologies in fashion communication, be able to analyse data creatively and develop exciting and relevant communication campaigns for fashion markets. You’ll be working towards a professional standard, formulating plans and identifying career opportunities in fashion communication. You will be confident in your abilities, be socially, environmentally and culturally informed and will be able to develop a successful career in fashion communication.
Your main campus is College Lane
This is where the creative arts, science and health-related subjects are based. This means you’ll share the campus with future nurses, scientists, artists and more. You can use the common rooms to relax with friends, work out in the 24-hour gym or have a drink in our on-campus pub or cafes. We also have restaurants for you to eat in or grab something on the go. Our Learning Resources Centres are open 24/7, which means you can study whenever suits you best. Want to pop over to the other campus? You can take the free shuttle bus or walk there in just 15 minutes.
What will I study?
Degree programmes are structured into levels, 4, 5 and 6. These correspond to your first, second and third/final year of study. Below you can see what modules you’ll be studying in each.

- Access course: Diploma with 45 level 3 credits at merit.
- IB requirement: 104-112 UCAS points – from a minimum of two HL subjects at H4 or above (with the remaining points to come from a combination of HL, SL and Core).
- IELTS: All students from non-majority English speaking countries require proof of English language proficiency, equivalent to an overall IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each band.
If you do not have the required IELTS or equivalent for direct entry on to your degree programme, our Pre-sessional English and International Foundation courses can help you to achieve this level.
