ABOUT
Overview
This innovative postgraduate certificate is the first course of its kind in England. It is taught by a pioneering team of academics in the world-leading Centre for Applied Dementia Studies at the University of Bradford who are making great developments in dementia research and care.
It is designed for practitioners from a variety of clinical backgrounds working in health care settings where diagnostic services and post-diagnostic support for people with dementia are provided. The programme aims to support learners to develop high-level skills in assessment, diagnosis, clinical management and ongoing support for people with dementia and their carers.
Study is through a blended learning approach and is delivered fully online. Assessment of the programme includes theoretical as well as clinical competence assessment undertaken by a clinical mentor. The programme aligns to tiers 2 and 3 of the Dementia Training Standards Framework.
This programme is suitable for practitioners in a range of roles including GP’s, social (non-medical) prescribers, practice nurses, community matrons and advanced nurse practitioners/clinical nurse specialists. Applicants must be able to engage in assessment and diagnostic activities, as well as offer post-diagnostic support in order to be able to pass the competencies for the programme.

Entry requirements
- A good first degree (2:2 or above) or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject area
- Current registration with a professional body
- To be currently working within a service that provides assessment, diagnosis and ongoing support for people with dementia
- Support from your employer to undertake this programme of study
- Have an appropriate clinical mentor for the duration of the course
- Access to a computer with a broadband connection, and the ability to download software to this and to access online resources including social networking sites
- Have computing skills commensurate with the demands of the programme
Clinical mentor
In order to complete the course you will need to arrange a clinical mentor who will work with you for the duration of the course.
Your mentor will be responsible for assessing your ability to demonstrate the clinical competencies required to complete the modules.
The clinical mentor will be an experienced dementia specialist, for example: a psychiatrist, neurologist, clinical psychologist, GP with a special interest in dementia, or nurse consultant, who is involved in dementia assessment, diagnosis and post-diagnostic care planning.
You will need to have arranged a mentor prior to starting the course.
You are expected to hold three planning/review meetings with your mentor and arrange three observation sessions during each module. Contact time with your mentor is approximately 10 hours for each module. You may also arrange for other joint activities between these meetings.
Your mentor is there for you to:
- discuss your learning needs
- support you around demonstrating the competencies in the module
- support you in thinking through clinical issues

English language requirements
Where English is not your first language you should have an IELTS or equivalent score of 6.5 with no element less than 5.5.

Research
The University of Bradford has been providing accredited programmes in Dementia Studies since 2001, and has a long history of cutting-edge research related to person-centred dementia care and innovative methodologies for researching and developing practice in health and social care for people with dementia.
All teaching on the programme is research-informed and delivered by an academic team who are actively involved in relevant fields of dementia research. Members of the course team have completed research projects and studies using film, music, photography, narrative, conversation analysis and other participatory methods to enhance understanding of the experience of dementia.
Please note that this course has recently undergone a name change from Practitioners with a Special Interest in Dementia. Existing applications are not affected by the change, and applications remain open for the September 2022 start date.

Accommodation at the University of Bradford in the UK is centered around The Green Village, recommended for students. It offers two options:
- Apartments: Ideal for those who prefer privacy, each apartment has six en-suite bedrooms with private shower rooms. They feature a shared kitchen/dining area and living space, along with a three-quarter bed, desk study area, and wardrobe in each bedroom. These apartments are also designed to accommodate people with disabilities.
- Townhouses: These are blocks of houses, similar to traditional English terraced blocks, and are the more affordable option. Each townhouse has 12 bedrooms sharing a large open-plan living space with a kitchen/dining area and living space. Each floor has four bedrooms sharing two shower rooms. Bedrooms include a three-quarter bed, desk study area, and wardrobe.
The cost of accommodation is about 50 to 55 pounds per week.
