Overview

With the UK and other governments around the world declaring a climate emergency back in 2019, tourism organisations are diversifying their actions to create sustainable growth within their industry. As such, environmental and regenerative issues will feature heavily within future practices.

This course will enable you to better understand how to protect and exploit fragile socio-economic resources. You’ll examine international best practice and learn how to shape new sustainable futures. You will cover key issues such as ecotourism, challenges to implementing sustainable practices in tourism, slow tourism with a focus on rural, wellbeing and wellness travel.

The sustainability agenda, and change management will also be explored, and the course will develop your theoretical knowledge of models and concepts applicable to real world scenarios.

Course structure

The main teaching and learning methods employed are a combination of lectures, online lectures, seminars, workshops, group work, fieldwork, laboratory-based work, library-based work, case studies and most critically, independent study.

This course will incorporate extensive use of the virtual learning environment (VLE). Module guides, lecture presentations, guidance notes, glossaries, discussion boards and other related materials will be available on the VLE.

Your assignments will be submitted online, and feedback is normally provided electronically.

Modules:

  • Research Methods for the Services Sector (30 credits)

Expand your knowledge of the key theories, methodologies and philosophies adopted in tourism, hospitality, aviation and events research. Develop your practical skills using quantitative data analysis software in workshops. Gain the critical foundations required to undertake your own independent research project.

  • Tourism Concepts and Issues (30 credits)

Discover more about the complex and exciting world of tourism. Explore tourism as a social and cultural practice, tourist subjectivities and the spatial dimension of tourism. Consider perspectives from different disciplines, whilst sitting firmly within the social sciences.

  • Current Practices in the Visitor Economy (30 credits)

Gain an inside knowledge of the current trends in the tourism, hospitality, aviation and events industries. Develop your understanding of current practices in the industry with the opportunity to undertake a residential field trip in the UK. Critically reflect on the relationship between theory and practice in relation to the visitor economy.

  • Sustainable Tourism (30 credits)

Enhance your understanding of how to shape new sustainable futures. Evaluate some of the key challenges to implementing sustainable practices in tourism. Develop your theoretical knowledge of models and concepts that are applicable to real world scenarios.

  • Sustainable Tourism Major Project (60 credits)

Undertake an extensive research project in an area of interest to you. Critically apply the knowledge and skills you have gained throughout your course to your project. Advance your research and methodology skills.

Facilities

You’ll be based at The Reg Vardy Centre, on the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s. The Reg Vardy Centre is a modern building with views of the river, and just a short walk from both the coast and Sunderland town centre.

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)

If you feel you already know some of the topics covered in this course, either due to previous learning or from experience of work, then you may not need to study all of the course. Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) is the name given to the process of gaining credit towards a qualification because of something you have learnt in the past. If you are eligible for APL you won’t have to learn the same topic again, and so you can be exempt from a module, set of modules or year of a course. If you think you may be eligible for APL, please contact the course leader.

Career ready

The course is designed to build on the core and transferable skills necessary for future work. Practical experiences and activities are embedded into the curriculum in order to develop and contribute to your ongoing personal and professional development. The University Careers Service and regional and national employers are frequently invited to promote employability measures and inform students about work experiences or opportunities.

This course has strong links with the local community and modules are informed by the industry and regional and national employers. Through work experiences and placements, the course offers regional and global business community, public organisations and others, an access to highly motivated and skilled undergraduates dedicated to the industry. You study a range modules that build on the tourism knowledge, insights and skills required to become a successful within the industry. The course reflects contemporary areas within the tourism industry where you can specialise in your area of interest within your dissertation and tailor this to where you see your future career.

 

If English is not your first language you should have at least one of the following qualifications (or equivalent) as a minimum.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

You need an overall score of 6.0, with at least 5.5 or higher in each component: reading, writing, listening and speaking. An alternative approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) will also be accepted if the applicant’s element scores are equivalent to those required for IELTS. After 6 April 2015, you must take your IELTS exams at one of the test centres listed on the UKVI website.

Pearson Test of English Academic

You need an overall score of 59 with no less than 59 in each skill.

Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)

You need grade C or above.

Cambridge Certification in Advanced English (CAE)

You need grade C or above.

 

 

Deadlines

26 January 2022 – UCAS deadline

Applications for all UCAS Undergraduate courses, except those with a 15 October deadline, should arrive at UCAS by 6pm on 26 January 2022. This is the ‘equal consideration’ deadline, which means course providers must consider all applications received by this time equally. 

25 February 2022 – UCAS Extra opens

If you’ve used all five choices, and you’re not holding any offers, you can add another choice using Extra.

19 May 2022 – University decision deadline

If you applied by 26 January and you’re still awaiting a decision from one of your choices, we have until today to decide whether we’re making you an offer. Any choices that are still outstanding after this will be made unsuccessful.

9 June 2022 – Deadline to reply to offers

If you receive all your university decisions by 19 May, you must reply to any offers by today (except if you are using Extra to find a place), otherwise they’ll be declined.

30 June 2022 – Final day to make an application to five universities

You can still apply with up to five choices until 6pm today. After this, your application will automatically be entered into Clearing. 

4 July 2022 – Final day to apply for a course in Extra 

This is the last day to add an Extra option to your 2022 application. If you don’t hold any offers after this, you will be able to add an additional choice using Clearing.

The university offers three different student residential buildings, all of which are within walking distance from the university campuses. All students that are residing in these buildings can take advantage of the free transport that the university offers. What is more, all the dorms are equipped with facilities like fridge, Shower, toilet facilities, Wi-Fi, bed Wardrobe, Washbasin and mirror, as well as car parking and bicycle storage.
The first student residence of the university is called Scotia Quay that costs up to £95.50 per week. Each room is suitable for up to 5 students. the second one is named Panns Bank costs about £77.79 a week and is also suitable for families of four. Lastly, Clanny House also costs around £77.79 per week and is suitable for couples as well as single students.

After Graduation

All the students have the opportunity to seek help from The Careers and Employability Service, a team dedicated to helping students find proper and suitable employment either during or after their education.
Students are encouraged to take on part-time vocational roles in order to gain perspective on the reality of the labor market and also earn extra cash. As a matter of fact, the university helps and guides them during this process. It helps students find part-time jobs that do not impact their studies or temporary jobs that can be done during vacations and breaks. Students also have the chance to take part in paid or unpaid internships and job placements that are related to their field of study.
The Careers and Employability Service also helps students with finding employment after graduation. They help students with the resumes, CVs, job applications and job interviews.
