Course structure

In providing a bridge from your previous science-based degree to this specialist masters, we recognise the importance of extending your hands-on technical experience. We use a wide variety of teaching and learning methods which include lectures, tutorials, project work and practical laboratory sessions. Compared to an undergraduate course, you will find that this masters requires a higher level of independent working.

Assessment methods may include individual written reports and research papers, exams and practical assignments.

Modules include:

  • Research in Practice (30 credits)

Gain an understanding of the expectations of Masters-level work and support in developing the appropriate research and communication skills.

  • Advanced Mechanical Engineering (30 credits)

Focus on the modelling, simulation, and control of dynamic engineering systems which can be applied in a range of applications such as Industrial Robotics and Process Control systems. Cover the use of formal mathematical models and the application of simulation software to investigate a range of theoretical and practical dynamic control topics.

  • Digital Engineering (30 credits)

Build on your existing knowledge of computer aided design (CAD) and design methodologies to provide an extended insight into a range of digital tools that can be applied in a modern digital design workflow. Explore how the following digital engineering applications can be integrated to create a workflow for a particular design process: Reverse Engineering, CAD, FEA, Digital Prototyping, CAM.

  • Project/Dissertation (60 credits)

Using your research and critical analysis skills, draw on the knowledge you have gained during the course of the programme to address a real engineering problem or research question at the forefront of the discipline.

Optional modules (choose one):

  • Advanced Materials Engineering (30 credits)

Study the latest research into the production, characterisation and application of advanced materials.

  • Smart Factories (30 credits)

Investigate the latest technology that can be deployed to improve the effectiveness of manufacturing facilities including the use of Smart Instrumentation, Industry 4.0 and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and Robotics and Automation technologies.

  • Engineering Management Practice (30 credits)

Learn about the issues facing modern engineering operations to include operations management and improvement, lean manufacturing techniques, supply chain management and development, maintenance strategy and development and condition monitoring and predictive maintenance.

Career ready

This course equips you for a wide range of engineering roles throughout the engineering and manufacturing sector.

As part of the course, you will undertake a project that tackles a real-world problem. These projects can be sponsored by external clients and we encourage and support you to find your own client and sponsor. This relevant work experience will enhance your skills, build up a valuable network of contacts and further boost your employability.

Potential engineering roles include project manager, design engineer, manufacturing engineer, mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, electronic engineer, product engineer and maintenance engineer.

Graduate success

Our recent graduates have gone on to work for companies such as McLaren Automotive, General Motors, Jaguar, Perkins Engines, GSK, Northumbrian Water, Hitachi and Parametrics Technology. Other graduates conduct research in major automotive manufacturers such as Ford, Vauxhall and Nissan.
