ABOUT

Overview

The content of the course mirrors the Sunderland-based equivalent course Fashion Design and Promotion. Explore every aspect of the fashion industry: develop concepts, create designs, construct garments, understand retail concepts, and plan and manage events. You will establish your own brand; from creating your own branding and marketing to graphic design and visual merchandising.

Our industry experts will support you to uncover your specialism. You will build core skills in fashion design, illustration, graphic design, textiles, photography, branding and product development all with a focus on fashion.

Final projects show the breadth of the course and have included; fashion lines, fashion magazines, homeware lines, branding and marketing campaigns and season portfolios for major high street stores.

Why us?

  • You’ll have access to a large range of industry standard equipment and resources, well-equipped workshops and state-of-the-art digital design suites
  • This course is based at our study centre partners in Singapore, Tashkent and Greece

Course structure

This course has a condensed structure which means students taking Stages 2 and 3 can complete the course in 18 months full-time or 24 months part-time. Students taking Stage 3 only can complete this in 9 months full-time or 12 months part-time.

In Stage 2 you’ll produce a fashion event including a catwalk show of your designs. You’ll learn as you go, liaising with venues, planning music, branding and marketing the event and not forgetting creating pieces for the show. The proceeds of the event will support you in your final year as you prepare for your graduate show which will be visited by industry experts and potential employers.

By your final year you will create a professional portfolio and undertake a major project.

Teaching is almost entirely practical and studio based, supported by lectures, seminars, tutorials, e-learning and independent learning. Assessment is almost totally through coursework.

Part-time study

If you study this course on a part-time basis you will typically complete 40-80 credits in a year, rather than the 120 credits of full-time students.

Year 1 (national level 4):

  • Design Theory 1 (20 credits)
  • Introduction to Design Practice and Fashion Promotion (60 credits)
  • Introduction to Fashion Product (40 credits)

Year 2 (national level 5):

  • Advanced Fashion Product (40 credits)
  • Advanced Fashion Promotion (40 credits)
  • Advanced Fashion Illustration and Portfolio (20 credits)
  • Design Theory 2 (20 credits)

Career ready

We’ll prepare you to work in areas including: fashion design, brand development, fashion publishing, production, design consultancies, PR and fashion retail.

To enhance your visibility to employers, we encourage you to participate in competitions and exhibitions. Final year students exhibit at their own Degree show, attended by industry professionals.

Career options

The main destinations for graduates are expected to be fashion-related creative industries. These include design, brand development, fashion publishing, production, design consultancies, PR and fashion retail. Some graduates may become freelance consultants or self-employed designers, or go on to further study or teacher training.

Past graduates have gone on to work for well renowned design companies such as Abercrombie and Fitch, River Island, Debenhams, TopMan, All Saints and Matalan.

Work placement

All students studying undergraduate Fashion Product and Promotion courses can take up a CV-enhancing work placement, a University-led industry initiative, or a professional and business development boot camp. By the term placement, we mean we are offering you a taste of the industry which might last anything from two days to four weeks on a part-time basis.

Fashion events

Get real life experience. BA (Hons) Fashion Product and Promotion students organise their own fashion event in their second year. Working together you will liaise with venues, plan music, branding and marketing, book models and of course create pieces for the show. Previous events have included a fashion film premiere, a catwalk show, a dance performance and DJ. The fundraising event, which is part of an event planning module, helps you raise money for your final year Degree Show.
