If you’re not sure which area of civil engineering you want to go into, this broad-based course is a good choice. In your first two years, you will concentrate on the core disciplines of structural engineering, water infrastructure engineering, fluid mechanics, and geotechnical mechanics, from both an analysis and a design perspective.
The second half of the course will allow you to focus on more specialised and advanced water engineering areas such as groundwater engineering, fluid dynamics, flood risk, sustainable drainage and water resources and your independent research project.
During your third year, you’ll spend a full semester doing the Integrated Design Project. The project encourages you to unleash your creativity on a grand scale by devising plans for an entire urban regeneration project based on a real site in Sheffield. You’ll investigate new design methods and construction materials while developing detailed designs such as elegant bridges, sustainable and environmentally sensitive multi-storey buildings, or state-of-the-art sports venues. It’ll give you invaluable project experience and a feel for the kind of issues you may encounter in your career.
Between your third year and final year, you’ll arrange a year working in an engineering company. This industrial experience could be on site, in an office or a combination of both and will put your academic studies into context, improve your skills and enhance your employment prospects. You’ll be responsible for finding your own placement but the departmental and faculty careers and employability teams will help you find the right position and get the most out of the experience.
All our teaching is delivered by research-active academic staff or university teachers with extensive industrial experience. The course challenges you to solve increasingly complex problems and gives you a solid understanding of fundamental engineering principles. In the final year, you’ll build on your core knowledge with specialist modules. You’ll graduate as a skilled, competent and well-rounded engineer who can confidently approach complex global problems.
Accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), which includes the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institute of Highway Engineers under licence from the Engineering Council. This degree is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Access to HE Diploma Award of Access to HE Diploma in a relevant subject including sufficient Chemistry units, with 45 credits at Level 3, including 39 at Distinction (to include Maths and Science or Engineering units), and 6 at Merit + Grade A in A Level Maths
Acceptable Maths subjects include Maths, Maths with Mechanics, Further Maths or Applied Maths. Pure Maths is only acceptable when combined with Physics. Statistics or Use of Maths are not accepted
GCSE Physics or Combined Science at grade 6/B
You must demonstrate that your English is good enough for you to successfully complete your course. For this course we require: GCSE English Language at grade 4/C; IELTS grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component; or an alternative acceptable English language qualification
