ABOUT

Course description

Our four-year BSc covers the structure and function of biological systems at the molecular level. You’ll do a year-long, paid work placement as part of your degree.

Our students have found placements at global pharmaceutical companies such as GSK and Pfizer, but your placement doesn’t have to be in the lab. You could look outside the bioscience industry in areas including market research, communications or business development.

A placement is a great opportunity to test out a career path and many students are offered a graduate-level job at the end. You’ll pay reduced fees for the year you’re on placement and you’ll still have the support you need from your tutor and the University.

During your time at Sheffield, you’ll study proteins, enzymes, hormones and receptors and learn about the various ways that biochemistry can be applied to major challenges affecting humanity today, from how we sustainably feed a global population, to healthy ageing and how new drugs are designed.

From your first year, you’ll study modules that span the molecular biosciences covering biochemistry, genetics, microbiology and molecular biology. Alongside these modules, you’ll have the freedom to explore complementary topics across the breadth of bioscience, such as biomedicine, plant science, evolution and conservation. You’ll have the option to study biochemistry in greater depth, broaden your interests or switch to another biosciences degree programme.

No matter what modules you choose to study, you’ll gain experience that make our graduates attractive to employers, including project management, problem solving, communication skills and data analysis.

We’ll give you plenty of opportunities to apply your new skills and knowledge too. You’ll be in the lab completing in-depth practicals across molecular genetics, DNA manipulation and protein structure analysis and you’ll get the chance to use cutting-edge equipment to run your own in-depth research projects in an area such as clinical diagnostics or brewing biotechnology.

Whether you choose to focus solely on biochemistry, or study a range of topics across the molecular biosciences and beyond, your personal tutor will assist you in tailoring your degree to your interests and career goals.

This course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology which shows employers that you’ve developed the practical skills and scientific knowledge that they’re looking for.

Modules

A selection of modules are available each year – some examples are below. There may be changes before you start your course.

In your first year, you’ll spend six hours in the lab each week learning the practical skills and knowledge that every bioscientist needs, including how to establish bacterial cultures, assess bioenergetics and perform gene cloning. Analysis classes will equip you with the skills you’ll use outside the lab, from interacting with your data to interpreting your findings. Your lectures will give you a broad understanding of the molecular biosciences, allowing you to explore what you’re most interested in.

In your second year, you’ll begin learning more advanced scientific techniques, both in the lab and in lectures, with topics including experimental design, genome editing using CRISPR/Cas9 and protein purification. You’ll continue to take analysis classes to develop your data handling skills further and you can choose to study modules that allow you to work in teams to come up with pioneering science enterprise ideas to launch a virtual business.

You’ll spend your third year on a work placement in industry. Previous students have found placements within industry, charities or government at organisations that include AstraZeneca, Pfizer and GSK.

In your final year, you’ll complete an extended research project alongside your chosen specialist modules. This will reflect an area of molecular bioscience that interests you. Depending on your interests and career goals, you can choose a project from: experimental science, clinical diagnostics, industrial biotechnology, molecular systems and computing, science communication or education and outreach.

accommodation

The international undergraduate and postgraduate students at this university can use different types of accommodation options and live in a safe and vibrant environment to focus entirely on their studies and get the best result, also the students can use the cafes and bars gyms, and other living facilities, on the other hand, they can have an accommodation tour and Sheffield city tour to become familiar with their living environment and make the most suitable decision, as we said, this university offers various accommodation options with different fees like £6,782.58 to £10,210.62 for a rental place in the city for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and they can choose to have a private or shared room.

After Graduation

The international students can work up to 20 hours in part-time jobs in the UK, however, they must refer to their visa to see whether they have study and work permits or not, we recommend you to focus only on your education to get the best results and be able to find the most suitable jobs in the UK or the global market right after graduation, on the other hand, if the international applicants need extra financial help to pay for their tuition fee, living, and study expenses, they can find part-time jobs under some conditions, also if the students find related jobs to their educational fields (with the help of the university), they will obtain more real experience and skills aside from the theoretical knowledge that they acquire during their study period.
