Introduction:
Secondary teaching at Nottingham Trent University (NTU)
This teaching degree provides graduates with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to teach the ICT and Computer Science at secondary school level. Time is spent in the University in lectures and seminars and in the classroom on placements, ensuring that by the end of the course, trainees are confident professionals ready to begin teaching in secondary schools.
What you’ll study
ICT continues to be a rapidly expanding area in schools. The PGCE Information Communications Technology and Computer Science course will enable newly qualified teachers to teach ICT and Computer Science with confidence, inspiring and challenging pupils in the 11-18 age phase. The course will include education professional studies, subject application studies and school experience.
What will I study?
Subject teaching studies will include:
- lesson planning and schemes of work
- monitoring and assessment
- special educational needs
- philosophy of ICT in education
- classroom management
- Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Computer Science frameworks and specifications.
You will also cover managing ICT across the curriculum, including:
- theory to practice
- teaching
- learning and pedagogy
- resourcing and resources in ICT
- Computer Science education
- knowledge
- skills
- understanding.
You will also study the personal development of capability and health, safety and legal issues.

The vocational nature of the PGCE Secondary and the fact that successful completion of the course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) means that graduates are ideally placed to pursue a career as a teacher in a secondary school or college.

Entry requirements
What are we looking for?
You will need:
- A UK honours degree or equivalent with a 2:2 – at least 50% of which is in the subject you wish to teach or in a closely related subject.
- GCSE English and Mathematics at minimum grade C or equivalent, We accept the GCSE equivalency taken via equivalencytesting.com or astarequivalency.co.uk. Applicants with pending qualifications will be considered.
- an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check, and any other safeguarding checks that may be necessary
- Two references – one academic and one vocational.
It may strengthen your application to have had some experience in a classroom in a UK mainstream school, setting or college, although this is not an entry requirement.
There is no longer a requirement to complete Department for Education Professional Skills Tests.

Tuition fees are payable for each year that you are at the University. The level of tuition fees for the second and subsequent years of your postgraduate course may increase in line with inflation and as specified by the UK government.
If you choose to study the two-year route of an eligible course, which incorporates a work placement, the fee for Year Two will be £1,385.
If you’re starting a postgraduate course in January 2023 you’ll pay the 2022 fee.
Late Applications
If you missed the UCAS January deadline, it’s not too late to apply to join us in September 2022.
Applying to university after the January deadline isn’t anything to worry about – we accept applications for most of our undergraduate courses until Thursday 30 June 2022.
If you apply after Thursday 30 June 2022, your application will automatically be entered into Clearing. Clearing opens on Tuesday 5 July 2022, but we recommend submitting your application as soon as possible.
