Introduction:
Construction is a global industry, and construction managers are at the centre of it. Responsible for directing various operations within building projects, from project planning, contract administration and safety management, to cost and quality control, they represent a varied and exciting area of the industry. Our MSc Construction Management course provides you with a framework for understanding the role of the construction manager, with a key focus on the management of construction projects from the perspective of the construction contractor.
Applying construction management principles and processes to project work, you’ll gain a critical understanding of management roles in industry processes. You’ll examine the technological processes and associated business functions in the UK and international environments and, through the application of research methods, advance your ability to identify innovation and continuous development in the industry.
What you’ll study
The course will cover:
- Construction management principles and process applied to construction projects
- A critical understanding of the role of the construction manager in the construction process
- Technological process and business functions associated with construction management, in the national and international environment, and
- The application of research and research methods to construction management, developing your ability to consider aspects of innovation and continuous development.
Course structure
The course is formed of six core modules, four of which are shared with other construction management courses. This provides the opportunity for multi-disciplinary group work, which aims to extend your knowledge and peer network. You’ll also be able to choose between a further two optional modules, offering the opportunity to pursue research or to undertake a work placement in industry.
Your seven taught modules will total 180 credit points. The modules’ credit points are weighted based on the total time you can expect to spend studying the module content, both in terms of contact hours and non-contact hours.

Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)

Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)
The RICS accreditation enables you to progress to Chartered Surveyor status once you have completed your studies. To become a Chartered Surveyor, you’ll need to complete at least two years of relevant professional work experience – the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC).

Applying with prior qualifications
You will need one of the following:
- Bachelors degree grade 2.2 in a construction-related subject, or,
- Corporate membership of an appropriate construction industry-related professional body which has been approved for this purpose by the University, preferably alongside industry experience at managerial level, or
- An alternative approved construction industry-related professional qualification, together with appropriate industrial experience at managerial level in the construction industry.

*Please note that if you are considering a part-time route that runs over more than one year, the tuition fee stated is for Year One of study. The course fee for Year Two is subject to annual review.
Tuition fees are payable for each year that you are at the University. The level of tuition fees for the second and subsequent years of your postgraduate course may increase in line with inflation and as specified by the UK government.
If you choose to study the two-year route of an eligible course, which incorporates a work placement, the fee for Year Two will be £1,385.
If you’re starting a postgraduate course in January 2023 you’ll pay the 2022 fee.
Late Applications
If you missed the UCAS January deadline, it’s not too late to apply to join us in September 2022.
Applying to university after the January deadline isn’t anything to worry about – we accept applications for most of our undergraduate courses until Thursday 30 June 2022.
If you apply after Thursday 30 June 2022, your application will automatically be entered into Clearing. Clearing opens on Tuesday 5 July 2022, but we recommend submitting your application as soon as possible.
