ABOUT
Introduction:
Products, services, systems: three small words with a galaxy of applications. From TVs to trainers, we’ll help you navigate the evolving world of product design, growing your technical, practical, and interpersonal skills along the way.
Our teachers don’t just teach. They’re collaborators, constantly encouraging you to develop your own unique design style. We’ll plug you into the industry from day one; you’ll be pushing live briefs to the edge of your imagination as you explore the needs of users, markets, and manufacturers. You’ll create with your mind, your hands, and cutting-edge software.
You’ll learn how designers guide projects as visionaries and leaders, and as the glue between specialists. You’ll be part of a studio culture that builds confidence through community, developing your work from preliminary sketches to fully functioning prototypes. Through placements, competitions and exhibitions, you’ll have the chance to meet and impress some of the biggest names in the game.
We’ve built this course in consultation with product design’s most influential employers. We know what they want, and that’s what we teach: with hard work and creative bravery, you could be following our global network of alumni to the likes of Adidas, Puma, Sony, Speedo, the BBC, Habitat, MADE.COM, and Matter.
What you’ll study
Product design is constantly evolving — and that’s exactly what makes it such a rewarding area to work in. On this course, you’ll be exploring all the challenges and creative possibilities of the field, as you get to grips with developing your own unique design style. Our job is to help you establish the toolkit that will support you throughout your career: your job is to make the most of those tools.
Risk-taking is a big part of being a designer. We want you to challenge the briefs and embrace the projects — to produce innovative solutions that push boundaries. Ultimately, you’ll graduate as someone with an appreciation of creative possibilities, a respect for technical practicalities, and the interpersonal excellence to work well with others.
We’ve developed this course through conversations with big employers and the Industrial Liaison Committee, and the professional experience of our own teachers. Based on those insights, we know what the best in the business are expecting to see from today’s graduates — and that’s exactly what we’ll teach you.
Together, we’ll be analysing the evolution of contemporary design — its history, its critical traditions, and its psychology. You’ll learn to create products based on sound design principles and methods, by understanding the ergonomic and anthropometric factors that impact design. Experimentation is key, so you’ll be working with a range of materials and techniques to develop effective, sustainable practices — and in our studios and workshops, you’ll soon start taking your own designs from sketches to fully formed prototypes. It’s fun, it’s dynamic, and it’s very hands-on.
Careers and employability
The course is designed to prepare you to succeed in the design industry, through work placements, working on real projects from industry, input from industry professionals, and contemporary course content.

Through modules and projects, you’ll study in Years One and Two, you’ll develop skills that employers are looking for and a design portfolio that showcases your design interests and capabilities. Our Employability team will support you in everything from finding opportunities to preparing your CV and practicing interview techniques.
