ABOUT

Introduction:

If you are interested in how countries are governed, who has power, how decisions are made and want to better understand the role of the state and government in tackling challenging issues of our times such as, climate change, gender equality, social media and political participation, then our BA (Hons) Politics course is for you.

Located in the heart of the city of Nottingham, with a backstory steeped in community and grassroots activism, this course offers students the opportunity to better understand the political world. You’ll learn how political systems operate in the UK and beyond, exploring the contested nature of contemporary political issues and debates. Through experiential learning, you will be given the opportunity to put your knowledge and ideas into practice via real-time simulations and game playing which will help you to develop important negotiating and communication skills – alongside your knowledge of politics and critical thinking skills.

Practising politics is at the heart of our BA (Hons) Politics course and you will benefit from our connections with Nottingham Citizens and other partner organisations. Throughout the degree, you will integrate the analysis of political issues with data analysis, as well as placement and work-based opportunities, all of which will ensure that you are well prepared for your future career.

There are many career paths you can take following graduation, including roles in the civil service, as researcher or data analyst for a national charity or political organisation, in business or marketing or even entering active politics as a local councillor or Westminster MP.

What you’ll study

Politics is a dynamic and constantly evolving subject, and it has a direct impact on our daily lives.

This flexible degree will give you the opportunity to explore pressing issues of international importance alongside analysing the latest domestic political developments. The knowledge you gain during the course is both practised and assessed through a diverse set of skills linked directly to the requirements of high-skilled employment. These range from core writing, reading, listening, and research skills to a range of key traits such as open-mindedness, creativity and entrepreneurship, resilience, and pitching ideas to – and debating with – diverse audiences.
