ABOUT
Introduction:
This course is ideal for students who want to develop their knowledge in a chosen subject specialism as well as gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which will allow them to teach in a secondary educational environment. Students on this course will be supported to become a confident and competent secondary school teacher who can enable children to learn effectively in a chosen subject specialism.

- The BSc/BA with Secondary Education courses are offered in a range of subjects, which are designated as subjects where there is a shortage of teachers in secondary schools;
- These subjects are: Chemistry, Computing, English, Mathematics and Physics;
- The course allows you to explore your chosen subject specialism in depth and gradually moves from an emphasis on the acquisition of subject knowledge and its applications in Year One and Year Two, to an emphasis on the pedagogical and professional knowledge and understanding required by an effective subject specialist teacher in the final year;
- Alongside your subject modules in Year Two, you will also undertake one education module which aims to introduce you to the foundations of pedagogical theory and effective teaching;
- In the final year of your study, you will undertake Level 6 education modules alongside postgraduate teacher training students, as well as completing professional practice that will allow you to be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS);
- Years Two and Three of your study include educational placement elements in order to prepare you for the workplace;

- The course design combines the essential elements required to enable you to commence a career in teaching as a newly qualified Early Career Teacher (ECT).These are: advanced subject knowledge at undergraduate level; knowledge of how children learn and are taught; specialist knowledge required to teach the chosen school subject and experience of being a practitioner in secondary schools.

QTS – Qualified Teacher Status
Successful completion of this course will lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Newly qualified teachers will be supported through the Early Career Framework (ECF), a two-year period of professional induction, which will ensure that your teaching career is built on a firm foundation.
Your future career
Upon successful completion of the course, graduates will generally enter jobs teaching children or young people. However, should you decide not to pursue teaching, other roles in an educational setting, including supporting, but with less direct contact with children or young people are also available. There are also posts available in other public sector organisations such as local government, the NHS and the civil service.
You will also be able to enter some non-teaching related jobs that find the subject specialist skills you learnt in Year One and Year Two desirable.

Entry requirements
What are we looking for?
Entry requirements for this course will reflect the same admission criteria as:
- BA (Hons) English
In addition, applicants must have GCSEs – five at grade C / 4 or equivalent including English and Mathematics, as this is a statutory requirement for anyone intending to enter the teaching profession. We accept the GCSE equivalency taken via equivalencytesting.com or astarequivalency.co.uk.

Fees and funding
International fees for 2022 entry onto a full-time undergraduate course are:
- £15,600, or
- £16,200 (for courses in the Nottingham School of Art & Design and Nottingham Business School).
Tuition fees are payable for each year that you are at University. Tuition fees for the second and subsequent years of your undergraduate course may increase in line with inflation and as specified by the UK government.
If you choose to do a work placement as part of the undergraduate course the fee for the work placement will be £1,385.
Late Applications
If you missed the UCAS January deadline, it’s not too late to apply to join us in September 2022.
Applying to university after the January deadline isn’t anything to worry about – we accept applications for most of our undergraduate courses until Thursday 30 June 2022.
If you apply after Thursday 30 June 2022, your application will automatically be entered into Clearing. Clearing opens on Tuesday 5 July 2022, but we recommend submitting your application as soon as possible.
