ABOUT
Studying in Transfers at the end of Year 12 at MPW College (London campus) in the UK:
Every year many of MPW’s most successful students are those who have transferred to us half way through their sixth form. See the high achievers section of this website. These are usually students who have chosen the wrong subjects at school or who, for a variety of reasons, have fallen behind with their studies in the first year.
Necessary information:
Duration: two years
Grade: end of 12
The tuition fees at MPW depend on the number and level of the courses being studied. They do not have a fixed fee per year group and, indeed, many students at MPW combine courses across year groups. The basic fee for full-time students is £10,765 per term at both A level and GCSE
Curriculum:
it may be best to make a break at the end of Year 12 rather than compounding problems until the end of Year 13 when the only solution will then be a third year in the sixth form.
MPW runs a full range of second-year courses that pay particular attention to revisiting, catching up and consolidating on Year 12 work.
Or, for those who clearly feel that they need to start again over a two-year course, the change of environment of a new college will often be much more motivating than the thought of having to drop down a year at school.
Career opportunity:
Under the new A level system, the lack of AS examination at the end of the first year of the sixth form at school may spell hidden dangers for some students. There will be just as many students who would benefit from a change of plan at the end of Year 12 as there were under the old specification, perhaps more. However, students will need to be increasingly self-aware of the difficulties that they are running into rather than reacting to AS grades at the end of the first year. As with all courses at MPW, transfers at the end of Year 12 require detailed advice at interview about exam boards, option papers and compatibility of syllabuses.
Application Requirements:
- Excellent school record across a range of subjects – a certified English language transcript of the student’s school marks for the two most recent years will be required at the interview stage.
- An understanding of the UK education system and clear university and career plans. These will be discussed at the interview.

Inside, over 70 stylish, en-suite bedrooms offer a comfortable space in which you can study and relax. A large canteen serves up an internationally inspired menu of meals and snacks throughout the day, as well as providing a social hub for the building.
Step outside of the building and you’ll be just moments away from world-famous academic and cultural attractions. Hyde Park, London’s largest green space, sits at the end of the street and the area has a thriving food and café culture.
After Graduation
Each student is assigned to a Director of Studies, whose role is to supervise students’ academic progress, university applications and general welfare. Directors of Studies have light teaching loads, enabling them to be freely available to students, parents and subject tutors. Regular individual meetings are held to discuss test results, progress in class, homework, UCAS applications and reports.
Parents are encouraged to communicate with Directors of Studies on a regular basis and informal meetings between parents, students and tutors provide a constructive forum for assessing progress. Written reports from the subject tutors and a covering report from the Director of Studies are sent to parents twice in the Autumn and Spring terms and once in the Summer term.
