Studying master’s in Sustainable Structural Engineering at Linnaeus University in Sweden:

Today, ever more challenging, and exciting structures are being built around us. Examples of such are tall and slender buildings or structures with a long span. This trend will most likely continue and, in parallel, there are increasing demands for structures that are sustainable in the long term. To succeed as a structural engineer in the future, you must have an in-depth understanding of the possibilities and limitations of different materials, construction elements, and systems. On the programme, you will be challenged intellectually with advanced theories for analysis but also by practical applications, for you to be able to take part in the shaping of a sustainable future.

Curriculum:

The first year of the programme consists of courses within mathematics, mechanics, finite element methods and structural dynamics, as well as other methodological and conceptual courses related to structural engineering, energy and environmental implications of building materials, and applied course in concrete structures. The second year encompasses an advanced beam theory course and three applied courses in structural engineering with focus on timber and steel structures. A course in scientific methodology is given before the final degree project.

In agreement with program coordinator, courses can be exchanged for corresponding courses within the program’s specialization. This can be applied when the student studied similar courses previously. In exchange for courses, the program coordinator makes sure that the program’s objectives are still met. The pre-requisite for courses and the local rules for graduation at Linnaeus University must always be met.

Application Requirements:

  • You must have been awarded a Bachelor’s degree (equivalent to a Swedish kandidatexamen) from an internationally recognised university.
  • Be able to demonstrate proficiency in English. For most master’s level courses and programmes, the requirement is also the equivalent of the Swedish upper secondary course English 6. There are some master’s level courses and programmes where English 5 or English 7 is the requirement.
  • You must provide certificates and diplomas of your completed degree(s) from an internationally recognised higher education institution.
  • Transcripts of completed courses and grades for each semester included in your degree. If you have had courses credited/transferred from previous studies, you must also submit official transcripts for those courses.
  • Copy of the page in your passport with your personal data and photograph, or a similar identification document.
  • You must upload your documentation both in the original language and in an official translation. Accepted languages for translations are Swedish and English.

General entry requirements for second­cycle studies and specific entry requirements for this program:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering or the equivalent. This degree must include a minimum of 7.5 credits in Structural Mechanics or Mechanics of Materials as well as mathematics corresponding to the courses Calculus 1 (7.5 credits) and Vector geometry/Linear algebra (7.5 credits) or the equivalent.
  • English 6 or the equivalent.
