Studying master’s in Design + Change at Linnaeus University in Sweden:

The Master Programme in Design+Change is a two-year artistic programme at the second level within the main field of study Design. The aim of the programme is to make students highly qualified for work in the field of design, with a focus on sustainability and design as a change agent. During the programme students develop skills in creating artistically articulated design proposals at a high artistic level and indepth knowledge of approaches and methods, which will make them well-equipped to work with different kinds of design projects.

Curriculum:

• First semester

In the first semester, the students focus on developing their artistic skills and their critical and analytical approach. The semester focuses on sustainability as a complex of ecological, economic, societal, cultural and political aspects. Through artistic methods and processes for exploration as well as artistic articulation and design processes, the students develop their ability to understand, articulate and reflect on current conditions.

• Second semester

In the second semester, the students practise creating, developing and articulating design proposals focusing on emerging design disciplines in relation to norms, norm criticism and norm creativity, as well as contextualising and critically evaluating these. The students acquire advanced knowledge and experience of different methods by working with different perspectives, approaches and contexts.

• Third semester

In the third semester, the students conduct design processes focusing on agency for change, emerging design disciplines and research. The students are introduced to transdisciplinary design, metadesign and contemporary design research. This semester focuses on research and the students are provided with a basis for future work as design researchers.

• Fourth semester

The fourth and last semester in the programme consists of an independent degree project in the form of a design project and a report in which the students contextualise and critically evaluate their projects. The project may be conducted in co-operation with an organisation, a company or other interest groups, or individually. Throughout the course, the students acquire in-depth knowledge within a specific part of the field of design.

Application Requirements:

• You must have been awarded a Bachelor’s degree (equivalent to a Swedish kandidatexamen) from an internationally recognised university.
• Be able to demonstrate proficiency in English. For most master’s level courses and programmes, the requirement is also the equivalent of the Swedish upper secondary course English 6. There are some master’s level courses and programmes where English 5 or English 7 is the requirement.
• You must provide certificates and diplomas of your completed degree(s) from an internationally recognised higher education institution.
• Transcripts of completed courses and grades for each semester included in your degree. If you have had courses credited/transferred from previous studies, you must also submit official transcripts for those courses.
• Copy of the page in your passport with your personal data and photograph, or a similar identification document.
• You must upload your documentation both in the original language and in an official translation. Accepted languages for translations are Swedish and English.

General entry requirements for studies at second level and specific entry requirements for this program:

• 90 credits in the main field of study, Design (including an independent project of at least 15 credits) or the equivalent,
  Approved portfolio and letter of intent.
