The two-year Master of Design program allows students to broaden their knowledge of design in the fields of visual communication, the built environment, interaction design and design studies. The MDes program provides a creative environment in which students are encouraged to explore conceptual and theoretical issues through project-based academic research. The program focuses on sustainability (ecological, social, and economic) as a philosophy fundamental to the future of design theory and practice. We also recognize the importance of sensorial and cognitive investigation in design. In parallel with the theory and methods seminars, the students develop their research through a creative project.

Application Requirements:
- Undergraduate degree or graduate diploma in design or equivalent in a relevant undergraduate degree program.
- High academic standing, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a scale of 4.30.
- Portfolio of creative work, writing samples, a letter of intent and a five-page preliminary research proposal.
- Transcripts: Applicants must submit official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
- Letters of Recommendation: Typically, two or three letters of recommendation are required from individuals familiar with the applicant’s academic and/or professional abilities.
- Statement of Purpose: Applicants must provide a statement of purpose outlining their research interests and career goals, as well as their reasons for pursuing the MDes program at Concordia University.
- Work Experience: Work experience in a design-related field is typically not required, but it may strengthen an applicant’s application.
English language requirements:
• Applicants, regardless of citizenship, whose primary language is not English, will be required to provide proof of English proficiency scores prior to their admission to Concordia University. Test results that are more than two years old at the time of application will not be accepted.
• English second language (ESL) course requirement: The Department of Education offers ESL courses to non-native speakers of English who are accepted by Concordia University but who must upgrade their reading and writing skills.
• In all cases, the University reserves the right to require an English language proficiency test if it is deemed necessary.
